Examining the cut

- We've talked all about the ways in which editors assemble shots to create scenes. But in this movie, I want to focus on the joining piece of each and every one of those shots, the cut. Now, when you're editing a scene, the positioning of the cut matters. The frequency of cuts matters. The relationship of the audio cut to the video surrounding the transition point matters. The conscious decision not to cut matters. And I want to take a look at several scenes where we can talk about specific cutting decisions. So let's start bare bones and work our way up. We'll first look at the absence of the cut. There's a lot to say for times when an editor hangs back from the edit, letting a scene breathe on its own. This is called a long take and it's used for different reasons in different types of scenes. I want to take a look at a long take from "Good Will Hunting", edited by Pietro Scalia.
