Join Todd Kopriva for an in-depth discussion in this video Dynamic Link improvements, part of Premiere Pro CS6 New Features Overview.
Premier Pro CS6 includes many improvements in Dynamic Link. Most of these changes are behind the scenes, and you'll recognize them as improved speed and stability, but one of the changes is a little bit more obvious to the user. In previous versions, you had to have Production Premium or Master Collection has a suite in order to use Dynamic Link between Premiere Pro and After Effects. However, now, with CS6, all that you need to have is the individual applications, Premiere Pro, and After Effects to use Dynamic Link between them. Of course, you can still have a suite.
Let's see an example of how Dynamic Link works, and how fast it can be now. In Bike Race One Project in the the Assets folder,we'll select a few clips, and choose File > Adobe Dynamic Link, Replace with After Effects composition. After Effects starts, and asks us where we want to save the project. I'll click Save with the default, Replace the existing project. And the clips are brought over to After Effects.
Let's add an adjustment layer, Layer > New > Adjustment Layer, and add the Cartoon effect to it. So in the Effects and presets panel, I'll type, Cartoon and double-click on the effect to apply it to the selected layer. And let's Posterize it a little bit more by bringing the shading steps down. And let's make the Strokes a little fatter, so that it's really obvious. And then I'll use Alt + Tab to switch over to Premier Pro.
If we put the current time indicator in an area that uses the After Effects composition, we can see the result of the Cartoon effect. I'll press the Spacebar to begin playing. (music playing) And even with the very computationally expensive effect, the Cartoon effect, we're able to get playback in realtime. The dropped frame indicator says that we had zero frames dropped during playback. However, if we did get any frames dropped during playback, we could always choose, Sequence > Render Effects into Out, to render a Preview file for any area with a red render bar, I'll go ahead and do that now.
Now, Premiere Pro's building a Preview file, so this area will playback in realtime. When the Preview file is build Premiere Pro will begin playback. >> Three, two one, go. (music playing) >> And there we go, we didn't need to build the Preview file but, it's good to know how to do it in case you have to. So, Dynamic Link is faster, more stable and can be used between the Point Products, After Effects and Premier Pro not just within the suite.
