Creating and modifying alpha channels
- You can create an alpha channel on a clip a number of ways. If the alpha channel signifies transparency, then the mere action of placing a clip in the timeline will let you use an alpha channel. You see, the timeline is transparent, so when we put things in the timeline and resize them, or mask them, or key them, then we see the tranparent part of the timeline. We can see the transparency grid in the timeline by going to the program monitor panel and changing the display to a checkerboard pattern. Depending on what I'm doing in the timeline, I find this distracting, so I usually have it off and only turn it on when I need it. To see the transparency of the timeline, all we need to do is resize a clip. Let's open sequence 1.4 and place your playhead on top of the first clip. In the program panel, double-click it so that you can see the control points. Grab one of the corner ones and drag in. You are resizing the clip and making it smaller.
