Continuity editing vs. complexity editing

- One thing I'd like to discuss before we dive into lots of different types of editing techniques is the concept of continuity editing versus complexity editing. Continuity editing is the style of film editing where the primary goal is to establish a seamless, coherent, continuous reality. This involves constructing shots together so there is no disruption in the viewer's perception of the scene. This means that although two shots may have actually been captured many hours apart, when the editor joins them together, the viewer perceives them as being from the same moment. In other words, the actual editing process is inherently messy. You're piecing together a lot of different moments to reconstruct a reality for the viewer. But when you're following the standards of continuity editing, you're doing everything possible to smooth over that discontinuity to produce a smooth, natural, continuous result. Continuity…
