Anticipating and following the action

Action shots add excitement to your stories. Shooting them correctly enhances their impact. When shooting something in motion, try to anticipate that motion. Try to move your camera a little bit before that object or person enters the frame and then leave some space in the frame in front of them. That extra space makes it easier to track that motion. It's also more comfortable for your viewers to watch. Here are some examples. I've got my camera in the tripod, and I'm going to follow the skater. So I leave space in front of her, so I can anticipate that motion into the frame. (Female speaker: Okay. Lots of speed. Breathe! Good. Better.) Similar story for the horse rider. Again, just try to anticipate the motion to follow along; just try to stay a little bit ahead of the rider. Here, I know this horseshoer's assistant is going to carry that horseshoe quickly to the scene, so I try to anticipate that motion and then just pull wide as he hands it off.
