Join Don Jones for an in-depth discussion in this video Discover simplified syntax, part of PowerShell: DrillBits.
- PowerShell versions one and two had some syntax…that, well, a lot of people found difficult to understand.…For example, if I wanted to display…a list of all services that were currently running,…I would've run Get-service…to start by getting all of the services,…and pipe that to where-object.…Where-object takes a -FilterScript parameter,…and inside that -FilterScript $_…is a placeholder for whatever objects…were piped into where_object.…So in this case $_ is going to represent the entire service.…
Now I don't want to look at the whole service,…so I'll type a decimal point just to access a fraction of it.…And the bit I want to access is its Status property.…Then I'll check to see whether…the Status property equals 'Running",…close my -FilterScript block, and hit enter.…As you can see I got the results I wanted,…but man that syntax is certainly a little bit difficult.…It's a lot of punctuation.…That's why version three of PowerShell…introduces a new, simplified syntax.…Gone is the script block.…Gone is the confusing $_ decimal point.…
