Modify slide masters

- [Instructor] Let's start by talking about ways to modify slide masters. This will be important for the MOS exam. You'll want to know how to change the slide master theme or background, modify slide master content, and create slide layouts. So I've opened 02_01 Welcome from the Exercise folder. Slide masters are important because they provide one place to make changes to every slide in your presentation. We'll start out by getting into the slide master view. You can click View on the ribbon. Then click on Slide Master. This takes me into the slide master view. Notice at the left side we start to see all of the different layouts our slides could use, but we don't see any of the content. If you scroll up to the very top, you see this Click to edit Master title style slide. This slide is larger, and it's always at the top of the left hand panel. This is the one you want to alter if you're looking to alter every slide in the presentation. You don't always see it because it's at the top and you have to scroll up to get there, so I just want you to look for that. The slide layouts below it are important too. If I just want to edit this particular slide layout, I could, or this particular slide layout. So you need to think about whether you're making changes to the entire presentation or just one layout. In this example, I'm going to click on the top slide and make some changes to the entire layout. Now, the first objective was to change the slide master theme or background. Notice that the ribbon has a Slide Master tab that's currently active. Themes and backgrounds help us edit the way that the slides look. Notice there's an Edit Theme section of the ribbon and a Background section of the ribbon. Let's start out by editing the theme. I'll click on the Theme dropdown. In the MOS exam setting, they would tell you which theme to use. You'll notice as I hover over these, each one has its own name. For this example, I'll go ahead and choose Berlin. Click once to apply this, and notice it applies to all of my slides. Notice that this theme includes lots of things, including colors, fonts, effects, and background styles. The Background section of the ribbon has opportunities to change all of these individually. So by clicking the Colors dropdown, you'll notice each is named. You'll notice that with Fonts, et cetera. So you want to practice clicking these dropdowns, looking for the names, and selecting them quickly so that you're able to do this in the MOS exam. If you're asked to change a background style, it's similar. And notice that I can hover to see what these different color options would look like. However, if you're asked to change the background to a solid color, something like that, notice the background has some more options. I'll click the more options arrow. This pops out a panel at the right hand side where I can make lots of different changes. One option over here would be to choose a solid fill color and then use the dropdown to choose from the list. Notice even these colors have names, so you'll want to practice looking for these within the MOS exam. I'll go ahead and choose this shade of green. And then you can see that this applies to all of the slides. If I don't like that, I can go back to the Themes dropdown and choose a different theme. I'll go back to Berlin, and that applies to all the slides. I'll also go ahead and close the Format Background panel at the right. You might be asked to change something about the look of the text on your slides. So if you were asked to change the title on all slides, you'd want to make sure and select that top slide in the left hand panel. And in this example, I'll change the title. I'll click in the title placeholder, and I can either select the text or click on the border around it to select that entire placeholder. I'll click my Home tab. Choose the bold icon. And this updates the titles on all of the slides. Our next MOS objective is to modify slide master content. In this example, I'd like to add a logo to every slide. Again at the left, I'll make sure that top slide is selected. I'll click Insert, choose Pictures. So in this example, I'll go ahead and double-click the logo. Notice it's inserted on this slide and many of the slides at the left. I'll go ahead and move this logo by dragging it to the upper right hand corner. Now, if you're asked to resize a logo or a picture, notice that I'm currently on the Picture Format tab of the ribbon. This appears anytime you insert a picture or have a picture selected. Notice within this ribbon there's a Size area. So I can change the height or the width by using the arrows or by typing something into that box. So I'll go ahead and resize and just reposition that logo. What I want you to notice at the left hand side is that the logo now appears on all of the slides. Another option would be to insert headers and footers. I'll click the Insert tab on the ribbon. Choose Header & Footer. This lets me add something at the top or bottom of every slide. In this case, I'm instructed to add slide numbers, but notice you could also add dates and times here or put some kind of text in the footer. If you click Apply to All, this will apply to all of your slides. Our last objective is to create a slide layout. I want to call your attention to the left hand panel. And remember that each of the slides we see here has its own layout, so we'd like to create our own layout with an area for video and an area for text. So I'll start by clicking the Slide Master tab on the ribbon. And then notice there's an Insert Layout button. I'll click Insert Layout. Notice it's given me my own layout. I can see it on the screen. It just has a title area right now. What I'd like to do is add a media placeholder. So back up to the ribbon, I'll click on Insert Placeholder. I'll choose Media. My mouse is now a crosshair, and I can click and drag on the slide to draw the size of the media placeholder I'd like on the slide. I'd also like to add a text placeholder, so I'll click the Slide Master tab again. Click Insert Placeholder. Choose Text. And again, I'll use my mouse to click and drag a box. And as I let go, I now see the placeholder for my text area. This layout would be called Custom Layout, but on the MOS exam you might be asked to rename it. So I'll click that Slide Master tab. I'll click the Rename button. Here I can replace that name. I'll call this Media. Click Rename. And now to test out all my changes, I want to go back into the normal view. I'll click the View tab on the ribbon. Choose Normal at the left hand side. So now I'm starting to see my slide numbers. In this particular theme, they actually appear in the orange box. So I can see slide one, two, and three as I move through these. The other thing I want to check for is my new layout. Let's say I want to add a new slide. I can click the New Slide dropdown. And I'm looking for my Media layout, and notice here it is at the bottom. So it lets me add a slide with that particular layout. Notice we also see the Landon Hotel logo on each of these slides. At this point, you could always return to the slide master view to reposition or change the way things look on these slides. So that's our overview of modifying slide masters. Remember to keep practicing these skills so that you can quickly do these in the MOS exam.
