Presentations need to be created in a cloud document library to work with PowerPoint Online. Learn how to create a PowerPoint presentation in OneDrive for Business and verify changes are being saved.
- [Instructor] There are several ways that a PowerPoint presentation can be created online. I'm going to show you how you can create this from the OneDrive for Business document library that's included with Office 365. We're already viewing the files within this document library, and you can see that there's some folders and some files that exist, but we need to create something new. Now, the toolbar at the top is where you'll find New and Upload and other ways that you can work within this document library. And notice how this menu changes, if something's already selected. So if you have a file selected, you may not necessarily see the New menu from this toolbar 'cause contextually, depending on what's selected, one file or multiple files, it's going to show you what you can do with that in this toolbar.
So make sure that you don't have anything selected and then locate that new drop-down arrow, and from this we're going to locate PowerPoint presentation. Notice there's several other different types of files that you could also create from this menu. When you select PowerPoint presentation within the tabbed area that we're looking at this library, it's going to change to the PowerPoint Online application. We know that from the upper left corner where it calls out the application that we're in. To the right of that it's going to show who you're logged in as, your document library, a link back to that, the name of the presentation and just like you might already be familiar within Office applications on your desktop, it gives it a generic title like Presentation One, Presentation Two, so here you can see that it's assigned it the name Presentation, and it's also indicating that it's already saved.
Because we're creating this in cloud storage, OneDrive for Business, it's already saving anything that we do within this presentation. Now, over to the left and below PowerPoint Online is where you're going to see the navigation area to switch between any slides that you have in here. Whatever slide you have selected, to the right is the slide that you're able to design, that is in that view. Now, if we need to change the name of this presentation to something that is more meaningful, go right over where it says Presentation and notice the screen tip is suggesting that this is how you can rename the file.
Let's give that a click and let's rename this. Press the Enter key when you're done, and it's saved the change of the name of this file. As you're working on this presentation and making future edits, you may need to change the name of this file or actually change the location of where it's being stored. You can still manage this within the file tab in that backstage area, just like you would in PowerPoint on your desktop. So notice in the backstage area that we have a place to actually rename the file, also save a copy somewhere else.
Now, notice this is Save a Copy, that means the existing copy is going to stay where it is in the document library, but maybe you need to make an additional copy somewhere else. Let's go ahead and click the back arrow to get out of this menu, and let's go back to the document library by clicking on Documents at the top. And finally, if you do need to move the file, know that you can select the file and then choose Move from the toolbar that you see here.
