What is Power BI?

- [Instructor] Microsoft officially debuted Power BI in 2015, but it's origin's date several decades farther back. They debuted Access in 1988 and Excel a few years after that. And there were also newer components like PowerPivot and Power Query, which grew from expanding the needs of Excel, a tool that remains a main stay of data modeling and analysis. In the last few years we see a surge in data volume and speed as well as an increased demand to understand and analyze trends from this data. Power BI allows us to scale up to this demand by creating models and report that cater to business users and decision makers. We can separate Power BI capabilities into three levels. First, we can monitor data trends. Second, we can analyze these data trend results to understand their impact to business organization. Third, we can make decisions and forecast future trends based on this data analysis. On the high level, we break down the Power BI process into three smaller sub-processes. First of all, we import the raw data from existing sources. Then we create transformations and calculations to make usable data sets. Lastly, we design visuals to see trends and relationships. In this course we will learn an important but not exhausted view of Power BI data methods by focusing on the first two processes steps. Power BI has the capability to easily share dashboards, models and reports in a controlled and scalable environment. In this course, we are going to focus on using Power BI desktop as the recommended mode for developing and designing dashboards. We can then upload these dashboards to shared cloud services. Such as Power BI Pro, Premium, Report Server, Embedded or Mobile. To learn more about these cloud services, check out the other Power BI courses in the LinkedIn learning library.
