Leveraging data types
- Using the right data type in Power BI determines our success in setting up calculations. We commonly use the number data type which includes decimal numbers, fixed decimal numbers, and whole numbers. We have several date data types such as date/time, date, time, date/time/time zone, and duration. We could run into issues with date data types if the reference field is not an actual date, or if the date comes from a different locale such as Europe which uses the day/month/year format rather than the US month/day/year format. Text data types include text values, but we can also set up numeric IDs as text data types. For example, we can make numeric US zip codes a text value because we would like to retain their leading zeros.
