Connecting to zipped binary data
- Binary functions allow us to read binary numbers and translate them into usable data. We can obtain NOAA data for an entire year through the zipped files on their website in the FTP section. On the website, we scroll down to the bottom of the list, and select the data for the most recent year to download. Click on it so it downloads to your desktop. You can access these files in your 0706 exercise files. We can see that the file extension is a .gz, a type of zipped file using the gzip compression utility, which we cannot typically open using native applications on our computers. In the NOAA station Power BI file, we select to add a new data source. We choose the text connector initially, and we select All Files, and go to our most recent exercise files. We choose the 2019.csv.gz data file. We see the actual file name and the extension tie, but we cannot directly access the data in the file. In the formula bar at the top…
