This video shows how to create a new board from scratch.
- [Garrick] Okay, now let's take a look at how to create a Pinterest board from scratch. Now, we already saw how to create your first board when you set up your account, but you can create a new board at any time, and you can create up to 500 boards in your account. To start a new board, go to your profile page which you can always get to by clicking your name here at the top. Here you'll see any boards you've created. This is also where you have the choice to create a board, or if you scroll down, to create a secret board. By default, boards you create are visible to anyone who comes across them. This makes it easier for you to get more followers. But there may be times when you want a board to be private to just you or for friends that you specify.
For example, maybe you're planning a surprise party for someone. You can create a secret Pinterest board to collect ideas for the party and invite the people planning the party to join the board and not worry about the guest of honor accidentally coming across the board themselves. But now, I'm going to create a regular publicly-visible board, so I'll come up here and click Create board. And here, I can give it a name. Let's say I want to create a board to collect recipes for desserts I find on the Web. I'll just call this Desserts. Notice that we also have the option to make this a private secret board from here as well. I'm just going to leave that off and click Create.
All right, so I've created my new board. It's currently blank because I just created it from scratch. But Pinterest offers some recommendations here so I can start adding or pinning content to this board called Desserts. Now, we'll talk about pinning next, but first let's see how else we can customize this board. I'm going to come up here and click this Edit button. So when you create your board, you give it a name, and that's pretty much it. But you can add more info like a description, a category, and so on which can help Pinterest better classify the board and help others interested in this topic to find it. But you can also use these for your own organizational purposes or to help you keep track of why you created a board.
So I'll just type in the description field and just type in a quick description. You can see that Pinterest has already correctly categorized this under Food and drink, but there's also a wide selection of categories you can apply here. This is also where you can come in anytime to make your board secret or to make it public again. And below that, you can add the usernames or email addresses of people you want to collaborate on the board with you. So again, if you're planning a party or event, you can invite the people involved, and everyone can add content to the board. We'll look more closely at adding collaborators a little bit later.
At the bottom of this window, we find the option to delete the board which will remove it and anything you've pinned to it. If I click that, notice it says that you can't undo this, so make sure you really do want to delete a board before doing so. Just cancel that. Now there's also the option here to archive a board which just hides it from your profile. You can't add new pins to an archived board, but this is a good option if you don't want the board to show up as available when you pin items but you do want to keep it and its pins available. You can always unarchive any board to make it active again. We also have the merge button here. It's pretty common, especially as you're getting started with Pinterest, to make several boards that end up being pretty similar to each other.
Instead of having all these boards, you can merge them together into a single board. Just click Merge, and you'll be asked to select the board that you want to move this board's pins to. I only have the one other board right now, but by selecting this, I would move all the pins from my Desserts board to Camping Ideas. I don't really want to do that, so I'm just going to cancel that. All right, so that's how to create a new board and customize it. I'll click Save, and now we're back looking at my blank board. We can see the description that I added up here. And next, we'll take a look at ways to pin content to our boards.
