The other 3-channel mode: Lab: Photoshop: Channels and Masks

The other three-channel color space in Photoshop is Lab, which combines a Lightness, or Luminance, channel with two perpendicular color channels, designated “a” and “b.” The Lab space has a much larger gamut than RGB, theoretically describing all visible colors. Note that blend modes are calculated differently in Lab than RGB. For those familiar with Lightroom or Camera Raw, the “b” channel is the same as Temperature; “a” is Tint.
