In Photoshop, an alpha channel may contain a mask, a layer mask, or a step in the process of creating a mask. The "alpha” in alpha channel comes from the Greek letter alpha, which figures into the formula used to define everyday average layer opacity. The formula was invented by a guy named Alvy Ray Smith, back in the late 70s around the time of the original Star Wars. It won Alvy an Oscar.
