Working with the sun as the rim light

- If you've watched my Foundations of Photography flash course, then you should already be familiar with the idea that a light in your scene serves a particular role. So, for example, you might have a key light shining light onto your subject. Or you might have a fill light filling in the shadows on your subject. Or a backlight shining a light around the edge of your subject. That's what we're doing here. We are using a backlighting situation. I've got the sun behind me to create this rim light around me. That's this light you're seeing on my shoulders here, around my head. It serves a couple of purposes. It separates me from the background which gives a much better sense of depth and scale in the scene. And it's also just real pretty. It's nice having highlights of up here. It makes it easier to tell the front of my head from the back of my head. Now, we're creating this using two tools. One, the sun, which is there at least half of the time, and using a reflector.
