In the last movie we looked at how a long lens really compresses the sense of depth in a scene and how you can use that to create very different compositions. We're going to work with that again here, but we're also going to take a look at depth of field. We've pulled Greg out from in front of the Golden Gate Bridge and dropped him into this polo field. And what I want to do here is play up the shallow depth of field that I can get with my long lens and combine that with some of the depth compression to create an environment and a sense of space in the scene that I just can't get with a wide lens. So I'm up pretty close to him here because this is very often how it is when you're hanging out with somebody and you decide to take their picture: you're usually standing pretty close when that moment happens and so you tend to work with shorter focal lengths, even if you have a very long lens on your camera.
