Working with backgrounds
One of the first considerations in photographing jewelry is the selection of a background. It's a little bit different for jewelry because you're photographing small objects so you really need to concentrate on detail and subtlety. Things you should look for are color and texture. Typically, I'll work with fairly neutral tones, because you want a little contrast with the jewelry, but you don't want to introduce a great deal of color. Most jewelry is reflective and if you do have a richly colored background Those colors will appear reflected in the jewelry. A nice starting place in choices are ceramic tiles. these all came from the local hardware store. You can buy individual tiles, and they are very reasonably priced. I don't think any of these tiles cost more than $2. Size-wise, once again, we're working with a fairly small area, so I typically look at a 12 inch square as kind of a target size for a background.
