Before we start taking about software that we need, I first want to talk about what it is we're trying to accomplish. When we create graphics for the web, one of the most common formats that we're seeing is a PNG 24 or 32 file. What this means is that these particular graphics can have varying transparency in the pixels, which means that we can have really soft edges across any color or any background graphic or photograph. Now these graphic formats are really desirable especially for web designers because we can take these graphics, and put them against any background and that makes them extremely versatile. The problem is that PNG-24 and PING-32 files can be rather large in file size. So what we want to do here is take advantage of the fact that we can use PNG-8 and give our PNG-8 files varying transparency. What this is going to do is give us a much smaller file size.
