Where to begin?

In portrait retouching, an important question to ask is where to begin? Well, I think that question can be answered by way of an anecdote. You know when you sit down to talk with a friend, you are really focusing on that person. You're looking at your friend's eyes, or listening to their voice. You're not necessarily noticing that there are some telephone wires perhaps behind their head in the back of the scene, or you are not noticing that small piece of trash on the ground. And I think that this experience is even more intensified when you're taking pictures with your camera, because you're so focused in on that person you're trying to capture a bit of their character, or essence, or personality.

Yet, when you all of the sudden open up that still image, you notice things that "didn't exist in real life," because you didn't notice them. Things that are distractions in a still frame, may not have even been noticeable when you where they are talking to that person. And so in portrait retouching where to begin? Well, I think a great place to begin is with those distractions. You know one of the things that we need to do in portrait retouching is we need to first clean up before we can enhance. So what then do we clean up? Where do we begin? Well, we begin with any of those little distractions that are just taking away from the subject; that are taking away from the overall intent of our portraits.
