When to choose Vibrance over Hue/Saturation
- So far, we've been using the hue saturation layer, which is a great adjustment, but it's not necessarily the best adjustment when it comes to restoring washed-out color. That's because it tends to be pretty heavy-handed. There's another adjustment called vibrance, though, which confusingly, also has saturation. Let's take a look here at this effect. You'll see that I've added a couple of adjustments. First up is the hue saturation effect, and if we're using a global saturation of 100, you see how it very quickly can become overcooked. Notice how the colors start to posterize, and we even get unwanted artifacts there in the sky. A value of 100 saturation tends to lead to some pretty unnatural looking color. On the other hand, the vibrance adjustment has the ability to also adjust saturation. I like to refer to this as saturation version two. You'll notice that when you crank it to 100, it doesn't tend to overdo it.…
