From the course: Photoshop: Smart Objects

Welcome

- [Narrator] Smart Objects are one of Photoshop's best kept secrets. Converting a layer to a Smart Object allows you to scale and to distort it as much as you want while giving you the freedom to return to the original at any time without any loss of quality. You can create Smart Objects from multiple layers, apply complex distortions to them, and then swap out any of those layers for a different image whenever you want. When you apply filters to Smart Objects, you can reorder those filters, and even apply them selectively by painting onto the filter mask. If you place multiple copies of the same Smart Object in a document, then you can apply different filters to each one. When you change one Smart Object, you instantly change all of them. And the filters are reapplied automatically. Use Smart Objects to create realistic mock-ups of you art work. And be assured that you can edit or replace those mock-ups whenever you choose. If you place a camera raw image into Photoshop, you're able to make a mask, to cut out the subject from the background. And then still access the raw controls for later fine tuning. Among the many extra tricks are creating recursive images with ease, producing text effects that work in perspective, and even incorporating movies into your Photoshop artwork. Smart Objects are a little known, but essential part, of the Photoshop workflow. They'll save you time and effort. And mastering Smart Objects is a Photoshop skill you really can't do without.
