- In this movie, we are going to put together all of these different puzzle pieces in regards to image resizing, And we're gonna start off here in Adobe Camera Raw, do a little bit of resizing here then finish this image off by working in Photoshop. All right, well here in Camera Raw, at the base of the dialogue there's an area which displays the color space and also the image size and resolution. Well if you click on that, it's actually a button which opens up what's called workflow options.
In this workflow options dialogue, you have an area where you can resize the photograph. Here we'll click resize, and we can choose different options, for example, we could select maybe long edge, in other words, I want my longest edge to be 12. This would give me a 12 by 8 inch image. And I can also select my resolution here as well. So I have defined the image size that I want to work with here. Next, click OK.
In doing that, you can see it updates our workflow options down below of this photograph of my friend Maria up on top of the ladder, 12 by 8 at 300 pixels per inch. Great. Well, that's the image that I wanna send over to Photoshop, so here we'll click open image. That will then send that file over to Photoshop, as you can see here. Now in Photoshop, if we open up our image size dialogue by going to image and then by selecting image size, what we'll start to see here, and let me zoom out so we can see a little bit more of this picture.
What we can see here is that currently we have a 12 by 8 image at 300 pixels per inch. Now when I get to this point in Photoshop, let's say that we do some creative work and some retouching and we clean up the sand or whatever it is, we're then ready to do our final resizing, and the client says, "Hey, you know what, I need "this image to be 240 pixels per inch." Well, we then will go through the four steps as we've seen before.
We turn resample off, step one. Step two, we change that resolution. Here it's gonna go down to 240 pixels per inch. Step three, turn resampling back on. And then step four, make any needed changes to the overall size. You can see that if I have this at 240 pixels per inch, I can print a 10 by 15. That's too big for what I need. What I need is something smaller, maybe something more like a 5 by 7 or maybe a 6 by 9 might be better.
So here I now have 6 by 9 at 240 pixels per inch in order to resize this image to those dimensions. And we can see the file was once 24 megs, now it's about 9. I would simply click OK. That would then apply the resizing to the photograph. This image would look great printed at that resolution and at this size. And also, as a side note, when it comes to printing, which we'll talk about later, often I'll print my images at either 180 or 240 and they'll give really good continuous tone photo quality looks.
