Using grayscales and neutrals for color correction

I'd like to talk to you a little bit about grayscale values and neutrals and channels. I want to lay the foundation for really both the conceptual and tool use, that we're going to get into a little bit later, for correcting our images. Let's look at this Arches Juniper image, this is a shot that I shot in Arches National Park many years ago. And we're going to start with the concept that we've already addressed really, is that this image, this RGB color image that we see here, is constructed out of three channels, a red, a green and a blue channel. Now you'll notice, and you might remember from some of the previous movies, that we talked about red, green, blue versus CNYK. And that red, green, blue is a capture and editing color space, a color mode, and CNYK is a color output mode for printing. When we look at an image like this, I want you to start really to conceptually think about this as being the sandwich of these three channels, of the red, the green and the blue channel. And…
