Using blend modes to create a composite

- [Instructor] In many ways, combining multiple images with blend modes can be some of the quickest and easiest types of composites to create. There's an instant gratification aspect to using them that can be very satisfying. The way that blending modes work often means that no layer masks are required, and if a mask is required, it's usually fairly simple. Let's explore a composite image that uses multiple blend modes, as well as a few simple layer masks. So I already have several layers arranged in this file, and right now, all of them are turned off except for the background, which shows the old clock. I'm going to turn on the ocean rocks layer, and I'm going to make it active. Now to set the blend mode for a layer, you come up to the top of the layers panel where it says normal, and then here are all of your blend modes. Rather than select them this way, however, there's a really useful shortcut you can use, and as long as the move tool or one of the selection tools is active…
