Type anatomy

- [Instructor] Let's have a quick run through of some type terminology. Type sits on an imaginary line referred to as the base line. The X height marks the height of the lower case characters. The cap height marks the height of the upper case characters. There is also, extending beyond the cap height, the ascender height. In terms of the different parts of the letters, we have the ascenders that go above the X height, the descenders which go below the base line, and the counters that are the enclosed interior areas of negative space. We're currently looking at a serif typeface and those are the serifs. In terms of type classification, there are numerous categories but we can make the broadest distinction of serif and sans serif and the sans serif typefaces have no such adornments. So those are some of the vocabulary terms that I'll be using throughout the course.
