Join Deke McClelland for an in-depth discussion in this video Smoothing an oversharp image with High Pass, part of Enhancing Underwater Photos with Photoshop.
- In this movie, I'll show you a great little trick…for taking the sharpness out of an oversharpened image…that involves the High Pass filter.…Now the first step is to figure out…what the High Pass Radius Value should be.…And to determine that, we need to actually…measure the edges inside of this image.…So I'm going to zoom in on this lettuce coral…by ctrl + spacebar, or cmd + spacebar clicking.…Here we are viewing the image at 100 %,…and there's our edge.…Which is to say we've got a…black line on one side of the coral,…and a white line on the other one.…
And so we can measure this edge…using the rectangular marquis tool,…just by dragging like so.…And at this point I can see that my height value,…there in the heads-up display, is five pixels.…And so that is the radius that we want to defeat.…Alright so I'll go ahead and click off…that selection and deselect it.…And now I'll zoom out.…Actually I'll zoom in just a little bit here.…And this trick is only possible as a static modification.…So we've got to first merge a copy of all of our layers.…
