Saving a selection as a layer mask: Photoshop: Channels and Masks

When selecting an image set against a single-color background, the best tool for the job—believe it or not—is the Magic Wand, set to a Tolerance value of zero. Then you can save that selection as a layer mask using the Save Selection command under the Select menu, or you can click the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
