Rotating with the new Rotate View tool

In this movie we are going to continue our progression through the tools that are located in the Application Bar. Well, the next tool that we encounter is called the Rotate View tool; you can select it here or down here in the Tools panel. You can access that tool by way of shortcut. Now if you had to guess the shortcut for the Rotate tool, you would guess the R key. Yep, now we have the R key. To rotate the image simply click and drag or use the Rotate icon or you can always type in a number here and it will rotate that way. Now to reset the rotations, simply click on the Reset View or press the Escape key. So I'll press the Escape key to bring thing back to normal. Now why would you actually want to use this tool? What it does is it frees you up a little bit so that you can rotate your image and this is incredibly helpful when you are retouching or you are working on a little portion of your image. You don't have to crane your next so to speak, you know, to look at something and make sure something lines up. You can rotate it really quickly and then work on that area and have good posture and good perspective on what's happening.

It can really help you out when you are working on the fine details of your images. One thing to keep in mind is when you rotate your image, it won't print this way and it will print the normal orientation or the normal rotation. Also when you use your tools like the Crop tool, you will notice that this particular Crop tool, the crop is limited to the original orientation. So when I crop this, I still see that rotation yet when I go back to Rotate tool and then reset the View, this is actually how that would print. So while you are seeing that rotation just keep in mind, it's just a helpful way to be able to change how you are looking at your image. It actually doesn't change the pixels or the pixel orientations or that the way that the image will be printed. So as you can see this is a fascinating new addition to Photoshop and one of the things that I found with this tool in my own workflow is that initially I was like, all right this is pretty fine, I can rotate my images.

But now it's kind of become something that's a little bit more functional. And again it helps me focus in on an area; it also helps my overall posture which means I have less neck strain, less eye strain and ultimately it helps me create or compiling images. All right, well that wraps up our look at the Rotate View tool.
