Reining in sharpness with a filter mask

- [Instructor] In this movie, I'll show you how to use a filter mask to modify a sharpening effect. Now as you may recall from Chapter 19, these white thumbnails that are located below Smart Objects here inside the Layers Panel are masks that limit the range of any and all smart filters. Now normally, I tell you to right click on these thumbnails and choose Delete Filter Mask to get rid of them. Because after all, if you're not using a filter mask, it just clutters up the Layers Panel. But in my case, a filter mask would be very useful. Because notice that even though the Unsharp Mask filter is doing a brilliant job of bringing out detail in the fish's eye and skin, it's also bringing out this muck and this crud in the foreground. And even though this muck is volcanic ash, which is another wonderful part of the natural world, I don't want to highlight it using the Unsharp Mask filter and so I'm going to mask the effect away.
