From the course: Design the Web: Creating Smaller Graphics with PNG-8

Preview the final project

- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm Chris Converse, and in this course we're going to take a look at some free and commercial software tools that will allow you to compress your PNG files to as little as 80% of the original file size, all while preserving the varying transparency. Now, while PNG-32 and PNG-24 files look great on your site, they tend to be rather large in file size. PNG-8 files are significantly smaller and can often be substituted for the other formats. I'll demonstrate how you can use commercial applications, free applications for both Macintosh and Windows and even a web-based application to achieve creating a PNG-8 with varying transparency. These techniques will significantly improve the user experience of your site, especially sites targeting mobile devices. Now, these exercise files are available to all subscribers of the lynda.com online training library, so download the files, and let's get started.
