Welcome

(music playing) Hi, I am Steve Caplin. As well as being the Author of the How to Teach in Photoshop series, I'm also a freelance for Digital Artist. Most of my work is for national and international newspapers and magazines. Working on a tight deadline means that I need the flexibility to be able to make changes on the fly and to use dummy headlines and cover text that needs to be swapped with the real headlines when they're written.

Creating these elements of Smart Objects means that I can apply any number of transformations, filters or distortions to the text. Then when I get the real text, it's an easy matter to open the Smart Object and change it's contents. I also need to create artwork that's used over and over again. This might be a display of magazine covers, or an image wrapped around a can, or artwork placed on an open book, or even a rippling flag. With Smart Objects, once the artwork has been created once, I can quickly and easily change the content and the whole image will instantly adapt itself to those changes.

I've been experimenting with Smart Object for several years. And I think you'll be surprised at some of the techniques I've discovered. Most Photoshop artists don't make user Smart Objects, and that's what I hope to change in this workshop. Once you've seen the power of Smart Objects, your Photoshop workflow will never be the same again.
