Join Chris Orwig for an in-depth discussion in this video Modifying the tone, part of Photoshop CS5: Athletic Retouching Projects.
Now that we have done some basic cleanup work, we are ready to work on tone.…One of the things I notice is that these midrange tones right here are…little bit too dark.…Also, I know that I am going to want to boost the contrast and the sharpness of this image.…I am also going to want to add a bit more grit to it, some film grain.…So with that in mind, I am going to create a curves adjustment here and paint it…into the faces and the eyes a little bit.…So we'll click on our adjustment layer icon for Curves and just go to the…middle and click and drag up, because these tones really are right there in the midrange.…
Next we want to invert that mask, press Command+I or Ctrl+I to do so, or you can…always go to the Mask panel and click on Invert.…All right, once you have done that select your Brush tool and then go ahead and…paint with white with the pretty low Opacity, somewhere less than 50%.…I will try 25 and on Dylan here I am going to go ahead and use a big…brush, and just start to really bring in some brightness into this area of the photograph.…
