Making a selection based on depth or focus

- Photoshop has useful commands that allow you to make selections based upon depth of field or what's in focus. This can be useful particularly when working with stylized shots or ones where you want to make a complex selection. Let's open up this before and after state here. And you'll see that we have a portrait shot on black. And then we came up with a new background for it. Now in this case, you could of course try to make a selection. Using something like the Quick Selection tool you could drag through, but as you see it gets a little tricky around the hair, and what about the spaces here? And now it's eating into the logo and the edges of paddle. And it's just not very believable. Instead we can rely upon focus. So if I say Select, Focus Area, and it will analyze and we can see what's happening here. Now, let's take a look at this with black on white. And it did a pretty good job.
