Locations to photograph the aurora borealis

- Winter photography means one thing more than any other for me, and that's the aurora borealis, the northern lights. Photographing an incredible display of greens, whites, purples, pinks and reds from solar wind hitting the Earth's atmosphere is an incredible sight to witness and even more spectacular to photograph. Now, where do you go to see and photograph this phenomenon? Well, I recommend the Arctic and from North America, Fairbanks in Alaska's a great base. The Yukon, you can combine mountains and aurora, which is wonderful. Limited access, but there are some great scenes there. And then, into Europe, Scandinavia is really ideal because of the road system. They have a high quality road system, well taken care of, so you can really get around and find different foregrounds. Sweden, Norway, Finland, all great places. Iceland, as well. The problem with Iceland is the weather's very unpredictable. In essence, you're chasing clear skies.
