Lighting textiles to expose texture

You hear again and again how important lighting is to photography. It's all we're capturing and with textiles, I think this is particularly true. All these fabrics we deal with are just fibers that are woven together in a different way and the best way to show their differences and variations is through proper application of light. In order to demonstrate this for you very clearly, I've prepared a real simple demonstration for you here using a flashlight, one of the simplest of light sources, and a couple of different kinds of fabric to help you visualize what I'm talking about. We're going to start with just a simple example to kind of show you how much light position can illuminate or hide texture. We're going to start out just shining the light straight into the fabric, and you'll notice as we bring the light around to the side of the fabric, how the texture really starts to appear more dramatically.
