Join Ben Long for an in-depth discussion in this video JPEG exposure strategy, part of Exploring Photography: Exposure and Dynamic Range.
- When you shoot in JPEG mode,…your camera still captures data…in the way that we've described in this chapter.…It captures far more data…into the brightest stops and into the darker stops…but in JPEG mode, your camera…then performs a lot of processing on the image…including a couple of steps that redistribute the tones…to a more normal relationship.…This means that an exposed to the right strategy won't work…when you're shooting JPEG, it's only for raw shooters.…However, if you're a JPEG shooter,…there is one JPEG specific exposure strategy…that you might want to consider.…
That's to head away from the exposed to the right idea.…In most situations,…you'll probably find that you can get slightly…better color saturation in JPEG images…with a very slight underexposure,…and I mean very slight,…usually just a third of a stop of underexposure…will be enough to give you…deeper, richer colors.…Now, in brighter scenes,…you may not notice the difference…but for most images…this slight change will make your images…look much better straight out of the camera.…
