It all starts with a channel: Photoshop: Channels and Masks

Photoshop is at its heart a grayscale image editor. So rather than seeing a full-color image, Photoshop sees no fewer than three grayscale images, working together but ultimately unique. These grayscale images are called channels. A mask is a specific variety of channel. Rather than conveying information about the color of the image, it conveys information about the edges of a selection or the opacity of a layer. Coming to terms with masking is perhaps the most sure-fire way to boost the quality of your work in Photoshop.
