How do I remove noise from an image?

- Noise is often caused by a camera sensor. Particularly when a longer exposure is used or you shoot at a higher ISO where you've bumped up the sensitivity of the camera. Noise is something that you want to remove from an image. You don't have to completely eradicate it, but if there's a lot of noise, it can great visual artifacts for both on screen and particularly for printing. Let's take a look at a raw file here. In this case, it's pretty dark. This image was shot with a shorter shutter speed and it's still got a bit of noise. Let's bump up the exposure here. I'll keep those highlights recovered, but lift the shadows. And down here where those shadows were, you'll see the most amount of noise. You can actually see some of that running right through the subject there. Now, once you get the general exposure where you want it to be, it's time to tackle the noise. Clarity is going to emphasize the contrast in the image, but you'll see it will also emphasize the noise, so be careful…
