How do I fix an image that's too dark?
- The opposite of too bright is, of course, too dark, and sometimes, if you're shooting a photo, you might choose to underexpose to preserve details, especially if I'm shooting at night, I might use a shorter exposure to avoid the longer shutter that can lead to unwanted motion blur. This will reduce overall noise in the image and eventually make a sharper photo if you're hand holding the camera, but it tends to give you an image that's a bit underexposed. Let me show you how to fix this. First, I've opened up a raw file, here, and we can see on the histogram that the details are really slammed to the left. The nice thing in camera raw is that the histogram can be dragged. If I go to the mid tones, here, for exposure, I can just drag to the right and bring those details back, allowing me to see more information in the scene and recovering a dark photo, particularly a raw photo, is substantially easier. Looking at the white and black points, I can bring back the contrast in the black…
