- [Instructor] All right now, any time you apply an editable smart filter to a smart object in Photoshop, you have the option of masking the effects of that filter, which is why in this movie I'm gonna show you how to convert an alpha channel into a filter mask. So I'm gonna start things off by turning off the RGB composite, and recall if you have an American keyboard that you can turn the RGB image on and off just by tapping the tilde key. Next I'll scroll back down the list here and I'll press the Control key or the Command key on the Mac, at which point I'll see a little dotted square next to my pointing finger cursor and I will click. So, if you Control click or Command click on that alpha channel, you're going to select that white region up there at the top of the image. Now switch back to the RGB composite and switch to the Layers panel. Now notice that you get an empty filter mask by default when you assign a smart filter.
