Join Richard Harrington for an in-depth discussion in this video Fixing exposure with a levels adjustment, part of Photoshop CC 2014: Nondestructive Exposure and Color Correction.
- One of the most versatile adjustments…that you'll make is a levels adjustment.…While you've probably mastered this adjustment…through a little bit of work in Photoshop,…there are some hidden features…that go along way.…I prefer to add this adjustment…as an adjustment layer.…I'll click on the icon in the adjustments panel.…This shows me the overall histogram of the details here.…Moving the middle slider will affect the mid-tones.…This finds a good balance.…Usually, though, I'll bring the blacks in first…right to the point where the histogram begins to rise.…
Similarly, I'll pull the white point in as well…to the right edge where the histogram lifts.…Once you've done that,…you've now achieved a clean black and white point,…and, using the middle slider, you can find balance.…Now, if it's too strong…you can always back that off slightly,…but it goes a long way for putting that contrast in.…Additionally, if needed, you can clamp…the output values of the white.…So, if you don't want a pure white,…lowering the output slider will darken the whitest point.…
