Join Steve Caplin for an in-depth discussion in this video Duplicating the skull and applying a Levels adjustment, part of Building Transparency in Photoshop.
- So here's our scene, we have the church background…and we have the skull as a separate layer.…In order to make the skull look like it's made of glass…we have to treat it, the first thing I want to do…is to duplicate this layer…so that we don't damage the original.…And in fact we can hide the original layer.…So we're going to start by making this skull appear shiny.…We don't want any color in it because that's going to…confuse the issue, so let's go up to the Image Menu,…choose Adjustments and Desaturate.…
And that simply knocks all the color out of it.…Now at present, there's some very deep shadows…in the corner of the teeth here, behind the jaw…and inside the eyes.…And that's going to cause us a bit of a problem,…because glass wouldn't have that kind of deep shadow.…To get rid of those shadows, we can simply go to…the Image Menu and choose the Levels adjustment.…And in here we can lift the output levels…and that just prevents the whole thing getting too dark.…
Now you can see we've rather lost contrast in here…
