Duplicating a layer to create a special effect

There will be times when it's helpful to create a new layer and then to add some new content to that layer. Yet, there also will be situations where it will be helpful to duplicate a layer. To duplicate a pre-existing layer in order to be able to have some creative flexibility with the way that you work on your photographs. So here let's take a look at how we can duplicate a layer. We'll be working with this portrait. And what I want to do is I want to duplicate this layer so that I can apply a creative effect. A creative filter. I also want to duplicate it again so that I can apply a black and white effect. Well let's take a look at how we can do this. In the Layer's panel, we have our background layer. We can duplicate this or copy this by dragging this to the New Layer icon. And you can do this with any layer in Photoshop. Next you'll notice that I have an exact duplicate of this, it's called background copy. I'll change the name of this by double clicking into that name field…
