Join Chris Orwig for an in-depth discussion in this video Changing the background color, part of Photoshop CS5: Athletic Retouching Projects.
Here we're going to examine how we can modify the color and tone of the background.…Now there are so many different adjustments that we can use in order to change this area.…Let's go ahead and make our way to the adjustment panel icons, and here, let's…choose Color Balance just for fun.…All that we want to do is make a real drastic adjustment, and we want to…overdo the adjustment.…This will help us deconstruct how we can create a really good mask here.…Next step, we make our way to the Mask panel, and here we choose Color Range.…Now in Color Range we do the same thing as we've done previously.…
We click on the color, then we hold down the Shift key, and we click and drag…around this area, looking to try to build up a selection of this background tone.…Now as we do this, we can see that, yeah, indeed we're building up a nice mask,…yet there is a problem, of course, right? We are selecting some of the face…there, and we don't necessarily want to have that in this mix.…So I want to go ahead and fix that up.…
