Artificial intelligence that works

You know what digital panoramas are, right? You go out and shoot a sequence of pictures all from the same vantage point. You shoot one, pivot a little, shoot another, pivot some more, and so on, taking care to make sure you have some overlap from one photo to the next. Then you import the images into a photo stitcher, which merges them together. Photoshop has a built-in stitcher called Photomerge and it's really good. Not perfect in all cases, but awfully darn close. And it's flexible, meaning that you can modify it's behavior.

Better still, Photomerge permits you to take your standard 12 to 20 megapixel images and blend them together to create hundred megapixel montages. At its heart Photomerge is a combination of two commands, Auto Align and Auto Blend, that let you merge multiple shots of landscapes, people, and things into perfect composites. Normally, I take a dim view of artificial intelligence. I'm sure one day super smart machines will make us quake in our boots.
