Applying filters non destructively with Smart Filters

- [Presenter] The most important thing to know before you start working with filters is that if you simply select the filter from the menu Photoshop is going to apply that filter and it's going to make a permanent change to your image. For example, if I go to the Filter menu and I choose Stylize and then select Oil Paint, if I apply this oil paint filter, let's go ahead and zoom in, we can see the changes have been made in the image area and they've been applied to the actual background layer. So if I were to save and close this image those painterly effects would be baked into the file. So in order to do this in a more flexible manner I'm going to use the History panel to go back in time and then I want to convert this background into a smart object. So I can either right click and choose Convert to Smart Object or we could use the Layer menu and choose Smart Objects and then Convert to Smart Object or I can use the Filter…
