Join Chris Orwig for an in-depth discussion in this video Adding multiple blending modes to one adjustment, part of Photoshop CS5: Athletic Retouching Projects.
In order to take this image even further, let's experiment a little bit with…this hdr toning layer.…First, let's name this layer.…We'll double-click the layer name and call this "hdr toning."…Next, what I want to do is I want to take this to a blending mode of Normal and…then bring my Opacity all the way up.…Now, I want to do that to illustrate something that we can do here.…One of the problems whenever you use a blending mode of Soft Light is that many…times your blacks become too black, too dense, too dark.…Well, you can modify that by applying a levels adjustment right to this layer.…
To do so, press Command+L on a Mac, Ctrl+L on Windows, and then here what I'm…going to do is simply modify my slider.…You can see I can darken up the blacks there, or if I want to brighten them up,…I could bring some midtones in that range, or I could bring up the output level…of those deep black tones.…The great thing about this is this can kind of help bring the image up a…bit, if we're adding too much contrast.…
