Wouldn’t it be great if Illustrator let you create gradient patterns whose colors change the course of a shape? Well, actually, it does. The trick is to bring up the Appearance panel, add a second fill, set that fill to any gradient you like, and change the blend mode of that fill. Great blend modes to try out are Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Hue, and Color.
