In this installment of his Photoshop CS5 Extended One-on-One series, Deke McClelland shows how to draw six varieties of volumetric objects and manipulate them in 3D space. The course covers how to make 3D objects from 2D layers, work with predefined 3D shapes such as spheres and cubes, import 3D models drawn in other programs, and maximize the power of the Repoussé feature. Exercise files are included with the course.
- Spinning a 2D layer in 3D space
- Using basic 3D shapes
- Importing a 3D model as an OBJ file
- Exporting a 3D model to the DAE format
- Painting directly on a 3D layer

Hi, I am Deke McClelland. Hello and welcome to Photoshop CS5 Extended One-on-One 3D objects, the second installment in my 4 part series on 3D in Photoshop. In this course, we will review 3D objects, which are the specialized layers that hold 3D artwork in Photoshop Extended. Photoshop provides a total of six ways to make a 3D Object. You can render a 2D layer as a flat postcard that you can rotate in 3D space, useful for billboards and backdrops.
You can wrap the contents of a layer around a simple 3D shapes, such as a sphere, cone or cube. For more complex objects, you can import a 3D Wireframe created in a stand-alone modeling program. You can project organic 3D forms using grayscale depth maps. Medical professionals can assemble DICOM layers into 3D volumes, but creative professionals can use them as well. And then there's Repousse, which let's you extrude and revolve 2D layers so that they become 3D.
If you haven't yet watched the first course in this series, Photoshop CS5 Extended One-on-One 3D Fundamentals, you should do so now before you watch this course. It will give you the foundation you need to understand how 3D works in Photoshop. The exercises in this first introductory chapter are all about setup, so that you when I are on the same page. And now get ready for an extensive look at 3D Objects in Photoshop CS5 Extended.
