Introduction

- Hey, welcome. My names Chris Orwig I am a teacher and a photographer and I'm actually on the faculty of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California where we are standing right now. We're up here in the mountains. The sun has just risen over the mountains. And it is a beautiful morning. And, you know, I'm really excited about the training that we have ahead of us. In this training title we're going to focus in on learning Photoshop CS4 from a photographic perspective. Have you ever looked at a photograph and wondered how did they just make that look so good? It's so amazing, intriguing and compelling.

Well, that's what we're going to talk about in this training title. We're going to look at how we can use Photoshop. And we're going to learn quit a bit about Photoshop, but we're going to learn about Photoshop in order to create compelling photographs. You can evaluate a good photograph by how it impacts the viewer. So what we're going to do, then, is learn how to use Photoshop in order to create images of impact. In order to create images that are compelling. That are engaging. That are enlivening. Now what are some of the things that you'll be learning in this training title? Well, we're going to focus in on a number of different topics, but just to highlight a few we're going to learn how to use curves in order to make your images snap.

We're going to learn how to convert to black and white. Another one of my colleagues is fond of saying "In photography you need to reduce and simplify.". Well, what happens if reduce or remove color? We're going to talk about how we can do that. In addition, we'll talk about how we can add some tone to our photographs. How we can color correct. We'll look at how we can retouch a photograph. Whiten teeth, brighten eyes, clean up skin. You can also use other tools to bring up the contrast or clarity or over all exposure. You can do so much with Camera Raw. Now we're going to learn more than Camera Raw. We'll learn about masking and how we can selectively modify an area of our image.

We're going to learn how we can sharpen our photograph's to make em really vivid and come to life. Because, you know what? In photography the eye goes to areas of brightness and areas of sharpness. So we're going to talk about how we can add some sharpening to our photographs. We're going to cover all these topics and a bunch more. And ultimately this is my goal. Marc Riboud once said "Photography is about savoring life at 1/100th of a second." What he was saying is that somehow photography helps him get more out of life. So my goal is this.

I hope that we can use Photoshop and pick up a little bit of photographic passion. In order to get more out of life. In order to create images that are that much more compelling. And on that note, throughout this training I'm going to include a few little creative tip movies for you. Just in order to bring a little bit of the photographic passion into the mix of what we're learning here. Now, in conclusion, it really is a privilege and an honor to partner with you in this training title. Thanks for joining me. And I looked forward to working with ya.
